Welcome to the ultimate listing of Asian/Asian American characters in mainstream comics. This list was compiled as part of Asian American Heritage Month 2006, and includes Marvel and DC heroes and villains throughout the ages.

All characters are listed chronologically from oldest to most current, with characters whose place in the chronology is still under research at the bottom.

Why?

Why would someone spend so much time creating a listing of Asian/Asian American characters in comic books?

Well, first of all, no comprehensive list of Asian/Asian American characters currently exists on the web. Furthermore, all lists that currently exist are not kept up-to-date, and many show a preference for certain characters over others.

But most importantly, Asian Americans have long struggled to improve the representation of our community in film and print media. Representations of our community and culture often border on extreme stereotyping rather than humanizing characterizations, and no better media exists for examining the evolution, over time, of Asians in media than in comic books, where some of the earliest stereotypes that have plagued our community saw visual form.

This website is organized chronologically precisely so that we can better understand how representations of Asian/Asian Americans have changed over the years, and how far we have still to go before we achieve a balanced view of our community in comics, and in media, at-large.
