Folks in support of SB 1070 have argued that it’s not that inconvient to have to carry your immigration papers everywhere you go. Well, I just got this from my local international students and services office:
Be certain to keep your I-94 card safe. If the I-94 card is lost, stolen or damaged, it must be replaced by applying for a replacement through the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. Currently USCIS charges $320 and the average processing time is 2.5 months. As a result, it is a costly and time-consuming process to replace an I-94 card.
So… SB 1070 tells international students and legal immigrants to keep your immigration documents in a safe place. As long as that safe place is your purse or your back pocket. And if you lose your immigration papers? Why, that’ll only be $320 of your money, and 3 months of your time when you cannot leave the country.
Yep, totally convenient.

Boycott Arizona Tea – That will really send a message.
The anti immigration law is not created to stop illegal immigration but to infringe on the civil liberties of American citizens of color.
The anti immigration law was not created to stop illegal immigration but to infringe on the civil liberties of American citizens of color.
Keith…who are the overwhelming majority of illegal immigrants? People of color..right?
Why are you against the state enforcing fed laws that are already on the books? It is a valid attempt to address a out of control environment and get it under control.
If I drive, I have to carry my driver’s license. If I fish, I have to carry my fishing license. How is this really any different?
Is the state government trying to control illegal driving or are they trying to infringe on the civil liberties of American citizens who drive and fish?
Get real.
Why didn’t obama respond to the governor’s request….5 times?
steveb, it would seem that your basic level of reading comprehension is lacking, please read again carefully:
The anti immigration law was not created to stop illegal immigration but to infringe on the civil liberties of American citizens of color.
It Amazes me how people will excuse discrimination because they think it doesn’t effect them, Yeah lets start stopping brown people because they might be illegal even though most likely they are citizens. Lets forget that many people sneak into this country even white people but that gets ignored or under reported because they aren’t Latino, black, or Asian. Latinos are an ethnic group not a race and many are also white. Let’s just turn a blind eye while our own citizens are harassed because if we get rid of illegal we’ll get our jobs back, jobs that we wouldn’t do for the pay they offer and because the companies that hire undocumented workers cut corners and put them in unsafe conditions, forcing these people into slave labor. American companies take advantage of the fact that the U.S. bankrupted Latin America in the 80’s and still exploits these countries through vulture capital and NAFTA and these people have no choice but to come here or suffer in poverty. I am fucking sick of this shit, and fuck you to anyone who disagrees with me.
keith, my reading comprehension is quite intact. That you somehow think that it the law is designed to infringe on Americans of color indicates to me that you lack understanding of
1. The major problems Arizona is facing…crime and mayhem
2. Lack of response from obama
3. Lack of the government in general to address the problem.
The bill is a valid attempt to address the situation. Since the feds won’t I applaud Arizona for taking the initiative.
It is plainly obvious you belong to the fringe that believe the U.S. is inherently evil. So I fully understand that you would try to twist what Arizona is doing into something racial. Unfortunately for you, you will find that if anything this will be the catalyst for something to finally be done to address the problem at the fed level.
And I also understand, Keith,…that you being the fringe person that you are would resort to profanity and crudeness to somehow defend yourself. This is basically the only tool you have.
Which does absolutely nothing to help your case.

I am in suppport of the bill. I have to carry papers (drivers license) and show it several times a week. Why make it a big deal and carry a copy of the green card. The only ones who would complain is the ones who don’t have one to show.
Do you go to jail and get charged with a crime if you do not show your driver’s license several times a week? Does everyone also get stopped for their license? What is the activity you are doing that requires you to show your license?
I have immigration papers. Not everyone who dislikes this bill worries because they don’t have papers to show. Folks like me dislike the bill precisely because I DO have papers to show, but shouldn’t have to carry them on my person at all times.
If you lose your license, you can go to the DMV and have a new one issued.
If I lose my immigration papers, I may face deportation at the worst. And even at the best, this post demonstrates how I would lose 3 months of processing time and more than $300 of my money.
Also, immigration papers are not wallet-sized.
